God, I love that film. I'd have liked to see Cusack in Nelson's role, but perhaps he'd have been too nice/loveable? Nic Cage would have been brilliant, but they couldn't afford him. :(

I'm not a huge fan of Nick Cage, Nick Cave on the other hand would have added a certain something!

I hadn't realised before that Nelson was 9 years older than two of the other cast members (who were still in high school). Nic Cage would only have been 4 years older, putting him on a par with the other characters, and Cusack would have been a contemporary of theirs. Perhaps the dynamic does work better with the much older actor. Dunno.

I'd quite like to have seen Nick Cave play Maverick in Top Gun. That would have added a certain something.

Thinking about it, actually, Dead Poets would be interesting to see. How about 'Hellraiser' ? He could play pinhead, no make up or anything, I mean how terrified would you be if Nick Cave suddenly appeared in front of you? He's probably work quite well in It's a Wonderful Life.
